In the following video, posted on YouTube in November 2014, Robert Garrett of Scotland explains how he was on the verge of ending his own life before he found ayahuasca. He’d lived most of his life with severe, chronic depression that manifested physically via painful tension headaches, and he felt generally overwhelmed with living.
“I had mother issues, I had father issues, I had being on this planet issues,” he explains in the video. “I couldn’t foresee my future. At points I was self-harming and desperately, desperately, at points, wanting to end it.”
In the detailed, hour-long video account (which he filmed from a porch in Ecuador following a powerful ayahuasca experience), he explains how, almost by accident, ayahuasca came into his life. He says he first discovered ayahuasca two years prior via a Joe Rogan podcast, and it “changed his life.”
Over the course of those two years, he says, he listened to other podcasts describing ayahuasca, featuring speakers like Graham Hancock, Aubrey Marcus and Reset’s own Amber Lyon. He describes the podcasts as “absolutely mindblowing,” explaining that they set something off in his brain that helped him realize some of the reasons he’d been deeply depressed all his life.
“There was this intelligence I knew I had in my brain that didn’t seem to fit in the world I was born into,” he says. This wasn’t an academic intelligence, but an emotional one, he says. He’d always had a keen sense of what other people around him were feeling.
As he continued to gather as much information as he could find regarding ayahuasca, he became more and more set on partaking in an ayahuasca ceremony. But this proved easier said than done. Nobody where he lived in Scottland had even heard about ayahuasca before, the expense of traveling to South America for a ceremony was limiting and it was difficult to know which ayahuasca centers to trust.
Eventually, as he explains it, ayahuasca helped show him the way. One day at a local pub as he was ordering a drink, a man with an Italian accent who he’d never met, turned to him and began talking about ayahuasca.
They exchanged information, and this set Garrett on his way. He eventually raised the travel funds via an Indiegogo campaign, and made it to an ayahuasca retreat Ecuador.
Watch the video below to hear Garrett explain how ayahuasca experience shifted his consciousness for the better and reset his path.
Thank you! I. Love. You.
Can you tell me the name of the retreat that you attended in Ecuador?
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful journey you’re on. I ‘know’ that I am being called in this same path. Actually, it was my recent intrest in seeing what Graham Hancock was doing all these years since I read Fingerprint of the Gods many years ago. Watching him speak is what brought me to investigate ayahuasca. So, I am trying to get prepared, physically, prior to this journey. I contacted my nephew who lives in Equador (with his Equadorian wife and 2 children) to find out if he has any recommendations. We plan to Skype in the near future. If it’s possible, could we have contact? Especially that you are in Equador and that would be the country I would like to go to. Thank you.
Wow, Robert- thank you so much for bravely sharing your experiences, both in the more distant and recent path. This was very, very inspiring and a lot of things you shared about how you were prompted to follow this path resonates with me (in particular the part about pent up anger and needing to release it caught all my attention). Looks, like I might have to muster the guts to embark on that path myself. Got no idea as to how to pull it off, but the signs have become just too clear and evident to ignore any longer. Thanks!
This is what it is to realize that we all have a connection to a higher power. As humans we cannot understand or have the mental capacity to conceptualize or understand this in its entireity. All we can hope for is an introduction that will make us all realize there is more to humans than what meets the eye. The world and universe as we perceive it to be is multi-layered and multi-dimensional. As we exist in our ‘reality’ there are other beings which exist in there own ‘reality’. Sometimes the boundaries that seperate can become blurred and we can become lost in the ensuing mayhem. If you can’t love yourself first and foremost then you you can’t love anyone else. QUID PRO QUO.
