When you look at how sexuality is portrayed in our culture it may be hard to imagine how it could have any kind of spiritual significance. Yet when cultivated and redirected, this energy can be used for many other things besides the act of sex, such as: creativity, ingenuity, spirituality, motivation and physical strength.
Most of us learn about sex from “the birds and the bees” talk from our parents, overhearing older siblings talk about it, from T.V. or from pornography. We are shown the tip of the iceberg but there is rarely any discussion around the power of sexual energy and what it can actually be used for. Sexual energy is better described as “life-force energy” because it does not necessarily include sex or sexual desire, but it always includes some form of arousal or sexual feelings, just not localized in the genitals.
The Power of Sexual Energy
The incredible power of sexual energy was talked about by Napoleon Hill, a 19thcentury author who wrote the bestselling book “Think and Grow Rich.” In this book he dedicates a whole chapter to exploring the connection between sex drive and success in business. He speaks about how simply having a lot of sexual energy is not enough to determine success.
The key is mastering the ability to hold onto this energy, to delay gratification by using it to our advantage, instead of falling victim to the pleasure-reward cycle. Sex transmutation means switching from sexual thoughts and the physical expression of sex, to focusing on something else with a specific desired outcome.
Napoleon Hill outlines the 3 purposes of sexual energy as:
- Perpetuation of mankind. (Reproduction)
- Maintenance of health, (he says that as a therapeutic agency, it has no equal!!)
- Transformation of mediocrity into genius through sexual transmutation. (Wait, what?)
That’s right, Napoleon Hill said that sex energy is a powerful tool to maintain health and that transmuting sexual energies can awaken one’s genius capacity!
The Universal Life Force
Another great author and philosopher, Wilhelm Reich, spoke about sexual energy as being a holy grail of sorts. He believed that harnessing the power of sexual energy can allow one to gain control of the “universal life force.” He called this universal life-force “Orgone energy” and believed that it exists abundantly everywhere, including within our own bodies, but it can be suppressed or depleted by unnatural repression or overuse.
These great leaders were ridiculed and even incarcerated for making claims about the healing power of sexuality. The public was not ready for this information, and there was still a great deal of fear around the power of sexuality, claiming that sexual power is in opposition to godly power. I believe that the reason sexual energy is seen as being in competition with godly power is because it helps regular people become more aware of their own power, which means they didn’t have to follow the rules of religion to be connected to the Source.
This universal life-force energy can be accessed through our sexual energy but it can also come from other means such as breath work, induced trance states and psychedelic substances.
Harnessing the “Cosmic Orgasm”
In recent years, psychedelics have become more mainstream and in some cases legalized for therapeutic use. A commonly reported experience with psychedelics is the “Cosmic Orgasm” in which one can reach a state of Ecstatic Union where they feel connected to everything in existence.
Similar to what can occur during incredibly intense sexual experiences, powerful medicines such as 5-MEO DMT and ayahuasca can elicit a feeling of orgasm that’s not localized to the genitals. This feeling instead extends beyond the bounds of the physical body and the whole being feels as if it’s flooded with light. Some will feel as if their heart is bursting open with bliss, and so connected to the divine that their lives are forever changed.
This is very similar to the tantric orgasm, in which your whole body is activated by the energy of bliss and orgasm becomes a bridge between the human and godly realms. The cosmic “orgasm,” often is not even sexual in nature but leads to a climax of energies strikingly similar to sexual orgasm, only throughout the whole body.
Tantrics believe that the moment of orgasm is a direct experience of the divine. This ancient philosophy understood that spirituality and sexuality have a lot in common. In fact, it is said that if you go down the rabbit hole of spirituality far enough, you will eventually find sexuality, and if you go down the rabbit hole of sexuality far enough, you will eventually find spirituality.
Sex as a Spiritual Path
Sex is undoubtedly powerful, but even sex can lose its power if we are not fully present to the experience. Being fully present means being open, vulnerable and wholeheartedly available to the moment, which allows sex to become a spiritual path unto itself.
Tantra believes that sexual orgasm must include a heart connection between partners in order to make it powerful enough to create a spiritual experience. Achieving and extending this type of orgasmic state can create a lasting transformation in consciousness that will open the mind to be more connected to the divine.
It’s important to be aware that sexual energy requires a lot of discipline to utilize consciously. We, as a culture, are addicted to immediate gratification and it’s something we must learn to overcome if we want to take it to the next level. Tantra is meant to help you to use the energies of sexual desire for liberation from desire itself; using sexual energy to get beyond sex.
Whether through sexual energy, hallucinogenic substances, breath work or induced trance states, we all can use this life-force energy to reach higher states of consciousness and connect with incredible power within us. Your experience with it depends on how you use it.
