Many a psychonaut has half-joked that all politicians should have at least one unitive experience on psychedelics before taking office. In Hunter Biden, we have the next-best thing: a U.S. President’s son who has had a profound encounter with the most potent psychedelic known to humankind: 5-MeO-DMT.
In his recently published memoir Beautiful Things, the current POTUS’ son recounts a 2014 trip to Mexico, where he sought psychedelic therapy to treat his addiction to alcohol and hard drugs.
At a clinic in Tijuana, Biden was treated with Ibogaine, a derivative of the African iboga shrub that has been used as an aid to recovery from drug addiction. “After I ingested it alone in a quiet room inside the Tijuana clinic, a slideshow of my life had flickered before my eyes, one image-burst after another,” he writes.
Then, at a beach house in the nearby town of Rosarito, Biden took 5-MeO-DMT. According to his memoir, this “unlocked feelings and hurts I’d buried deep for too long. It served as a salve. I stayed sober for a year afterward.”
Biden describes his 5-MeO experience as profound. “It connected me in a vividly renewed way to everyone in my life, living or dead,” he writes. “It felt as though I was seeing all of existence at once—and as one.”
Along with being potentially useful in treating drug and alcohol addiction, 5-MeO-DMT has been shown to bring relief from depression and anxiety and to promote overall wellbeing.
In a recent interview with Lucid Times, psychologist Dr. Joseph Peter Barsuglia noted that he believes many of 5-MeO’s curative properties stem from its documented ability to occasion a “complete mystical experience.”
