Precautions for Beginning Psychedelic Users

by Amber Lyon 5 Comments

If you are considering trying psychedelic medicines for the first time, it’s imperative that you research how to create the ideal set (mindset) and setting (space, location) for your experience.  Set and setting can make the difference between a life changing trip and a trip from hell.

In order to help you maximize your psychedelic experience, check out the First time Tripping Basics- Precautions and Suggestions for Beginners on Bluelight.org

Some tips:

  • If you’re in a bad mindset- depressed, in a bad mood, or not feeling well- then do not trip. Wait until you are feeling better.
  • A party is definitely not the place for your first trip
  • Pick some people who are either experienced or are good friends to sit with you during the trip
  • If you take antidepressants, do your research.  Many psychedelics interact with these medications poorly, some in potentially fatal ways.

I agree with all of them ,but the first point can be clarified: if something bad or extraordinary happens the day planned for trip it is better no to do it.
But if we want to work on our depression or anxiety, it actually may increase the day of the trip, the anticipation can be pretty stressful, especially adding the half day fasting… In these cases one should go ahead and do it.
Also a day or two after the trip should be free from job or other demanding activities, even good ones like going to friends bright day… I always try to pick before and after as neutral as possible.

I’d also say surrender to it, detach your ego from what your seeing and try not to control the situation.

Definitely agree with all the above, except for one caveat… if you wait for chronic depression to clear up before you trip, you’ll be waiting forever because the trip is what you need to get over your depression. Well that’s how it worked for me anyway – I’m so glad that I was ‘careless’ enough to ignore the advice waiting for a positive mindset before tripping – acting out of some pychotic masochism I was actually trying to make my whole life experience more painful by trying acid for the first time while I was struggling with a heavy suicidal depression which had been on and off for several years, and was most definitely ‘on’ at the time…

Man, without that acid trip I’d probably still be a miserable waster. Never had a more profound experience in my life, than tripping while in the grips of depression. It is terrifying, it is profane… and it shows you exactly what is going on, including the fact that YOU can CHANGE the whole lot, every last drop of everything. For me anyway! Of course I’ve tried to share the experience since then… and imagine my confusion when other people had the opposite reaction… confusion and guilt… the embarrassments of a novice shaman… turns out that was just another chapter to learn from 🙂

Since then I’ve given up evangelising and trying to tell people what’s good for them. We all know that kind of thing is nonsense. All I can do is relate my experiences with honesty and be glad that I have such magical tales to tell.

Since this has become a bit longer and more heartfelt than I’d intended when I started typing, I’ll turn to Terence to close my post:

“You have to take seriously the notion that understanding the universe is your own responsibility.. because the only understanding that will be any use to you, is your own.”

A big part of set is intention. Prior to the experience, get comfortable, tell yourself you are loved and there is nothing inside yourself to fear. Try to come up with a question you would like to ask the Overseer. It doesn’t have to be heavy or too far-out. My intention prior to a DMT experience was “how do I attract more love into my life”? The answer I was given was “give more love dumb shit”. How simple is that!
