For many people, the fear around COVID-19 isn’t of dying from the virus, but of living with it. Scientists have found that cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabivarian (CVN), two different compounds found in cannabis, may help reduce the inflammation that creates some long-term COVID symptoms.
One of COVID’s most dangerous aspects is its ability to create enduring health problems. “Long-haulers”—sufferers who continue to experience severe complications long after recovering from the initial symptoms—contend with conditions that can include unbearable pain, fatigue, tremors, insomnia, difficulty breathing, multiple organ damage, headaches, hair loss, and debilitating cognitive impairments.
Extended periods of this have driven some long-haulers to suicide.
Behind some of the most extreme symptoms of this virus is something called a “cytokine storm.” Simply put, this is a flood of inflammatory proteins that the body produces to fight infection. This inflammation can wreak havoc on the body.
Biochemist Dennis Hill, who successfully used cannabis oil to cure his own cancer, once told Reset, “One of the most important health benefits of cannabinoids is their anti-inflammatory property. In this, they are strong modulators of the inflammatory cytokine cascade.”
Researchers are now working to determine whether these cannabinoids are a viable path to the treatment and rehabilitation of COVID long-haulers.
